MSM is an organic compound containing sulfur. A colorless solid, it is relatively non reactive. Because of its stability, it is used industrially as a high temperature solvent for both organic and inorganic substances. However, it is MSM's ability to treat arthritis and allergic rhinitis that will be the focus of this review.
A study conducted by Nizam's Institute of Medical Science in India chronicled MSM's effectiveness at treating osteoarthritis. A total of 118 patients were included in the double blind, placebo based study. The patients were divided into four groups. The first group received 500 mg of glucosamine per day. The second group received 500 mg of MSM per day. The third group received a combination of 500 mg of MSM and 500 mg of glucosamine per day. The fourth group received a placebo every day.
After 12 weeks, it was noted that the groups who received glucosamine, MSM, or a combination of the two noticed significantly improved signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis compared to the group given the placebo. Among other things, the patients showed a significant decrease in their Lequesne index scores. The Lequesne index is a composite measure of pain and disability, with separate self report questionnaires for hip and knee osteoarthritis.
Another study conducted at the Genesis Center for Integrative Medicine in Graham, Washington documented MSM's effects on seasonal allergic rhinitis. For 30 days, 55 patients were given 2600 mg of MSM per day. After 30 days, the patients noticed significantly reduced symptoms. Energy levels were increased, and plasma IgE and histamine levels were more stable. The study concluded that MSM supplementation can be helpful for reducing symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
